What is Kapeng Barako?
Barako is a Tagalog word which is translated by Google as fearless. It originally referred to the male stud of an animal but the word is now used to refer to a macho or strong man. Kape, of course, means coffee. Kapeng Barako is called as such because of its strong taste.
Kapeng Barako belongs to the Liberica coffee variety which was brought to the Philippines from Liberia in West Africa when the Spanish came to colonize the country. It was first planted in Lipa, Batangas because of its high altitude and excellent climate for growing high quality coffee beans. Kapeng Barako is now planted in other areas in the provinces of Batangas and Cavite. Compared to the the Robusta and Arabica coffee varieties, Liberica coffee has bigger cherries which produce bigger coffee beans. Its tree can grow as high as nine meters with big dark green leaves notable for their glossy yet grainy surface. The tree also produces fragrant white flowers and coffee beans which are then roasted and grounded into coffee beans. Liberica coffee beans are well known for its strong aroma. Who We are
